The Consumer Protection Bill, 2019 has been passed by the Lok Sabha on Jul 30, 2019, and Rajya Sabha on Aug 06, 2019. This bill was introduced in the parliament by the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan. The New Act seeks to replace the more than 3 (three) decades old Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (Act). Set out below are some of the Key Highlights of the New Act: - Covers E-Commerce Transactions: The New Act has widened the definition of 'consumer'. The definition now includes any person who buys any goods, whether through offline or online transactions, electronic means, teleshopping, direct selling or multi-level marketing. The earlier Act did not specifically include e-commerce transactions, and this lacuna has been addressed by the New Act. - Enhancement of Pecuniary Jurisdiction: Revised pecuniary limits have been fixed under the New Act. *Lockdown extended to May 17*: ( Late post) • After a comprehensive review, and in view of the lockdown measures having led to significant gains in the COVID-19 situation in the country, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) extended the lockdown period for a further period of two weeks beyond May 4, 2020. • MHA has also issued new guidelines based on the risk profiling of the districts of the country into Red (hotspot), Green and Orange Zones. • The guidelines have permitted considerable relaxations in the districts falling in the Green and Orange Zones. Here are some key points from the new guidelines: - Movement of individuals, for all non-essential activities, shall remain strictly prohibited between 7 pm to 7 am. - Public transport allowed in Green Zones, not in red or orange. Dear Friend, I wear a mask in public and stand in the boxes six feet apart not for me, but for YOU. I want you to know that I am educated enough to know that I could be asymptomatic and still give you the virus. No, I don’t “live in fear” of the virus, I just want to be a part of the solution, not the problem. I don’t feel like the “government is controlling me”, I feel like I’m being a contributing adult to society and I want to teach others the same. The world doesn’t revolve around me. It’s not all about me and my comfort. If we all could live with other people's consideration in mind, this whole world would be a much better place.
