Farmer Bill: Why Congress is hypocrite..

*Farmer Bill: Why Congress is hypocrite* Here's what Congress' stance has been on farmer's bill in the past: 1-The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020: The bill seeks to provide for the creation of an ecosystem where the farmers and traders enjoy the freedom of choice relating to sale and purchase of farmers' produce. Congress in the past: Congress in its manifesto 2019 mentioned that “Congress will repeal the Agricultural Produce Market Committee’s Act and make trade in agriculture produce - including export and inter-state trade-free from all restrictions. The UPA government prepared the draft Bill titled as “Agricultural Produce Inter State Trade and Commerce (Development and Regulation) Bill 2012”. However, it was not pursued further. Congress just before 2014 Lok Sabha elections publicly announced that Congress ruled states should de-notify the fruits and vegetables from the APMC Act.  In pursuance, Congress ruled states

In defence of the Farmers Bill

Govt. is trying to shift the Agricultural sector from a ‘Production Based Supply Chain’ to a ‘Demand-Driven Supply Chain’. Rs. 1,00,000 crore Fund for Farmers declared by the FM towards Post Harvest Infrastructure and Rs. 10,000 crore Fund for Micro Food Enterprises will complement the downstream investments by the Corporates thus completing the reform of the Supply Chain. 1) The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 seeks to provide for a national framework on farming agreements that protects and empowers farmers to engage with agri-business firms, processors, wholesalers, exporters or large retailers for farm services and sale of future farming produce at a mutually agreed remunerative price framework in a fair and transparent manner and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Benefits The new legislation will empower farmers for engaging with processors, wholesalers, aggregators, wholesalers, large retailers, ex

The Farmers Bills 2020 and controversy about it

Image
Farmers in Punjab and Haryana have been protesting against three ordinances promulgated by the Centre on June 5. After the Monsoon Session of Parliament began this week, the government has introduced three Bills to replace these ordinances. Lok Sabha passed these bills this week.  SAD leader Sukhbir Badal announced in Lok Sabha that Harsimrat Badal, the Union minister for Food Processing Industries from his party, will resign in protest over these bills. What are these ordinances, and why are farmers protesting? They are called The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. While farmers are protesting against all three ordinances, their objections are mostly against the provisions of the first. And while there is no uniform demand among the protesters or a unified leadership, it emerges
