Maha govt orders inquiry into alleged Rs 400-crore land fraud by Larsen & Toubro

[Minister Ranjit Patil said criminal cases would be lodged against the directors of the company and BMC officials if they were found guilty]

Minister of state for home Ranjit Patil has ordered an inquiry by a principal secretary on charges that Larsen & Toubro (L&T) misused land in Powai meant for industrial use to build 10 residential towers of 24 storeys. Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu alleged that the irregularity was worth Rs 400 crore.

Patil said criminal cases would be lodged against the directors of the company and BMC officials if they were found guilty.

“We will inquire into allegations under the Mumbai Regional and Town Planning Act. We will examine whether a no-objection certificate was taken under the Urban Land Ceiling provision and if BMC officials violated laws,” the minister of state said.

The result of the inquiry would be out in two months, said Patil.

Prabhu said the construction had come up on surplus ULC land. He said L&T, a real estate and engineering giant, took permission for construction from the BMC and changed the land use from industrial to residential.

“The company should have paid a fee to the government and the BMC but this was not done,” the Shiv Sena MLA said. He said there had been a violation of the MRTP Act, ULC laws and Development Control Rules.

BJP MLA  an President of Mumbai Unit, Ashish Shelar alleged that there was a nexus between corrupt BMC officials and the company. “There should be strict action in this case,” he said.
