Water Transport for Thane

Alert Citizens Forum of India welcomes the decision of the Thane Municipal Corporation to explore and start Water Transport as an alternative mode of transport for Thane.
On June 4, 2016, Alert Citizens Forum had given a memorandum to the Municipal Commissioner suggesting that the TMC should explore possibility of starting Water Transport and Tourism in Thane.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has identified one potential route, and two conceptual routes for the ambitious Inland Water Transport (IWT) network covering a total distance of 124 km.
The project has been divided into two phases, of which the potential route under phase one has been identified as Vasai- Mira Bhayandar-Ghodbundar Road-Kolshet-Saket-Diva- Bhiwandi-Kalyan which covers a distance of 46 km.
TMC have called for proposals from consultants who will help it design the DPR.
The waterways transport system was suggested as an alternative mode of transport by Alert Citizens Forum of India, last year in June to TMC.

The TMC and participating agencies like neighbouring corporations or the Mumbai Maritime Board will develop jetties at these spots along the creek skirting the city to start the routes using catamarans, speed boats, etc.
The TMC expects the detailed project report to be ready by end of June 2017 following which the execution will be taken up.
Under phase two of the project, two conceptual routes has been identified, of which one route is identified as Saket- Vashi- Karvi Nagar-Navi Mumbai (CBD –Sector 11) covering a distance of 37 km.
The second route has been identified as Saket-Mandala-Trombay-Gateway of India which covers a distance of 40 km.
The TMC officials have identified the routes under phase one after ensuring the potential location of jetties, origin/destination and the location of Intermodal Transport Hub at every routes.
The construction of one jetty, a drop off, ticketing counter along with information desk would cost around Rs 7 crore. TMC has planned to construct seven jetties, which will cost around Rs 49 crore. The six municipal corporations which would come together for setting up the internal water transport include Kalyan-Dombivali, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Mira-Bhayandar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur and Ulhasnagar.
Boost to tourism
The Ulhas creek along Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli, Diva, Mumbra, Kalwa, Kopri, Gaimukh, Bhayandar Pada further up until the Ghodbunder road can be used for inland water transport.
Tourists can take a ride around the Thane creek belt through the water route.
This will also help generate revenue for the city.
Why water transport?
Water transport is cheaper than rail or road transport. Thane has a huge coastline and the residents will be benefit a lot if waterways are used. It would also ease the crowd in local trains.
