RAW and IB

RAW ( Research & Analysis Wing) is India's external intelligence agency which is headed by Secretary (Research), and works under Prime Minister Office (PMO) but reports to National Security Advisor(NSA).

RAW primarily, analyses foriegn countries Political & Military Development especially neighbours such as China & Pakistan. It recruits Officers from IPS, IAS, IRS etc. and other personnels from State Police or other Central forces. Mostly field officers are choosen from Army or IPS cadre. It also has stringers attached to it. Mostly, their work is kept classified in view of national security.

RAW works closely with CIA, MI6, MOSSAD in Afghanistan from Indian consulate of Jalalabad and Kandhar. Have a department called Special Frontier Force (SFF), which focuses its operation over China and have deep assets in Tibet. Similarily, Establishment 22, a branch of RAW played a vital role in Bangladesh Liberation War 1971 by forming civilian guerrilla force Mukti Bahini to counterattack East Pakistan.

IB (Intelligence Bureau) :- India' s Internal Intelligence agency, works under Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) but it adminsters through PMO and directly report to NSA like RAW.

Works closely with various state police departments like CID, ATS and also co-ordinates with CBI, DIA, ED etc. on various matters and also colaborated with RAW during covert operations like arresting Indian Mujahidien operative like Yasin Bhatkal, SIMI operative of Abu Jindal, terrorists linked to Lashkar e Taiba from Saudi Arabia and Babbar Khalsa Militants. Primarily focuses on internal security and naxal insurgency.

The Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW or RAW) is the primary external intelligence wing of the Indian Government. It was created after the 1962 China war and 1965 Pakistan war which exposed gaps in intelligence gathering undertaken by the  (which until then handled both domestic and foreign intelligence). This convinced the  Government that a specialised, independent agency was required for foreign intelligence gathering.

The primary function of R&AW is gathering foreign intelligence and counter terrorism. In addition, it is responsible for obtaining and analysing information about foreign governments, corporations and persons to advise Indian policymakers. It is also involved in the security of India's nuclear programme.

Foreign analysts have often referred to R&AW as an effective organisation and one of the primary instruments of India's national power and as one of the most fearsome intelligence agencies operating in the region

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India's internal intelligence arm and reputedly the world's oldest intelligence agency. It was recast as the Central Intelligence Bureau in 1947 under the MHA.

Shrouded in secrecy, the IB is used to garner intelligence from within India and also execute counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism tasks.

Understanding of the shadowy workings of the IB is largely speculative. Many a times even their own family members are unaware of their whereabouts. One known task of the IB is to clear amateur radio licences to  enthusiasts.

The IB also passes on intelligence between other Indian intelligence agencies and the police. The Bureau also grants the necessary security clearances to Indian diplomats and judges before they take the oath.

On rare occasions, IB officers interact with the media during a crisis situation. The IB is also rumoured to intercept and open around 6,000 letters daily. It also has an email spying system similar to FBI's Carnivore system. The Bureau is also authorised to conduct wiretapping without a warrant.
