Sub: Toll Policy of Maharashtra.
Respected Sir,
The concept of charging toll was first introduced in Maharashtra by the then Shiv Sena - BJP Govt, way back in 1998.
The motive was to recover costs of major infrastructure projects undertaken in the state - 55 flyovers in Mumbai and the Mumbai - Pune Expressway.
However, subsequent Congress - NCP govt. made a mockery of the toll policy.
As a result toll was charged on all the roads in the state leading to a lot of public resentment.
Today almost 16 years have passed since toll was first introduced and by a fair assessment, in projects that were then started, the contractor must have recovered his costs.
Alert Citizens Forum of India now requests you the following:
1. Comprehensively review the toll policy and come out with a white paper on the issue.
2. Immediately cancel toll on small and ancillary roads imposed by the previous government.
3. For major infrastructure projects done in the state, at least exempt 4 wheelers - small cars of individual residents from paying toll. This will give relief to the common man.
4. The govt may continue to charge toll from commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles till it takes a final call on the subject.
5. For future, announce a pragmatic and transparent policy taking in view past experience.
The people of Maharashtra expect a lot from you. Trust you will not disappoint them.
Regards,
