SAVE WATER - RESPECT WATER PROJECT
Our NGO Righteous Foundation distributed 2000 Save Water springs to the residents of Sahakar Nagar in Pune.
This user friendly spring costing just Rs 10/- can save upto 30% of water per household per day.
Saving Water is the need of the day.
Last year, for the first time, Mumbai City and surroundings were hit by a 25% water cut.
For a city which was never ever short of water, this water cut came as a huge jolt.
People started wondering as to how, even with a good monsoon and news of lakes overflowing, was there a shortage of water.
The fact of the matter was that though the major lakes supplying water to Mumbai were over flowing, all the lakes had gathered silt upto 6 feet- which was never cleaned.
So if you spread over the silt over the total surface area of the lakes – and you have that much less storage of water every year.
Water is necessary for the sustenance of human life.
While at times, when the monsoons are good, the supply seems abundant.
However one must understand that water is not a limitless resource, particularly the fresh potable water most necessary to human survival.
More than three quarters of the Earth's surface is made up of water, but only 2.8 percent of this water is available for human consumption.
As the population of the world increases, it is more important than ever to maintain a clean, available source of water.
With a view to create awareness as regards the need to conserve and save water, we have launched a unique project- 'SAVE WATER - RESPECT WATER'
The approach to this project is to initially to create awareness amongst people to 'RESPECT' Water.
Once that 'Respect' dawns in one’s mind, the person will make efforts to save water.
Alongwith our Advisor and Consultant, Mr Sudhir Gawand of Thane, we analysed the areas where Water is most commonly used in households and found that most of the water usage in a home occurs in the bathroom.
A typical household of four uses 260 gallons per day, with 75 percent of water being used in the bathroom, 15 percent in the kitchen and 10 percent for washing clothes.
We found that the Flush Tank is the one area where maximum water is consumed through the day by the entire household.
So we did an R & D as to how we can reduce or control the usage of water over here.
Our approach was to devise a solution which itself will take care of the problem.
Mr Sudhir Gawand's R & D has given birth to a very user friendly and cost effective kit which should be fitted in the flush tank of your bathroom.
This kit – consists of a Stainless Steel spring which can be can be installed by oneself directly and easily- no need of a plumber and it ensures that water is released in quantities required.
As long as you hold the Flush Lever, water will flow. The moment you take your hands off the lever, water stops flowing.
Once this spring is installed in the Flush Tank, it has been proved that appx. 30% of water is saved everyday per household.
If the same is spread across the Greater Mumbai area, it will mean that per year appx one full monsoon season’s water can be saved.
The spring is made of stainless steel, so does not corrode and is a Trade Mark/Registered design by Righteous Foundation.
The life of this spring is 3 to 5 years and is very cost effective, priced at Rs. 10/- only.
Our target is to motivate people in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nasik etc to save water and then spread pan India.
